Welcome to the College of Mines
and Earth Sciences!
GETTING STARTED
Academic advisors are here to help you succeed. As educators and problem solvers, advisors advocate for students as they navigate their personal journey of higher education and attain their academic goals. Through inclusion and connection, advisors open doors to new opportunities for self-awareness and growth, empowering students to define their roles as citizens within local and global communities.
Register for classes as soon as possible to make sure you get the schedule that works best for you! Freshmen and transfer students may register for classes once they attend orientation and meet with an advisor.
Returning and continuing students are assigned a registration date based on class level and number of hours completed at the University of Utah as well as transfer, test and other credit.
Degree Audits show you what classes you need before you can graduate. Your degree audit is an automated report that matches the courses you have completed and are currently taking with the requirements of a particular major, minor, or certificate. It is important for you to run a degree audit at least once a semester.
Schedule Builder is a tool that will assist students in building the best class schedule based on their needs. Courses can be picked out according to your preferences and time can be set aside for work, athletic practice, or any other breaks.
You may also view class schedules on the Registrar's website.
Umail is the official e-mail service used by students, faculty, and staff at the University of Utah. All official correspondence will be sent to your Umail. Please be sure to check it often. Your assigned Umail is your UNID@utah.edu. It is reccomended that you create an alias. Please see instructions on how to create an alias below.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS AND TRACKING PROGRESS
In addition to completing your major requirements, you will also complete general education and bachelor's degree requirements. You can learn more about those requirements here:
Successful students meet with their advisor every semester. At certain points in a student's academic career at the U, they are required to meet with their advisor to continue attending classes.
Students are responsible for complying with all University regulations and deadlines. However, sometimes students experience unusual or extenuating circumstances. The petition process allows students the chance to be granted exceptions on certain policies for non-academic reasons such as illness, military leave, family emergencies, etc.
COLLEGE OF MINES AND EARTH SCIENCES HIGHLIGHTS
The Student Epicenter, the CMES's advising center, opened in 2018 and is accessible from the first floor lobby and FASB west entrance. The Epicenter helps students get involved and connect to resources they need to succeed and, ultimately, make an impact on the world. Among other services, they provide up-to-date scholarship postings, information on CMES clubs and student chapters, open study sessions, and help with resumes, interviewing skills, and applying for graduate school.
The College of Mines and Earth Sciences Dean's office is located in the Fredrick A. Sutton Building (FASB). Attached to FASB is the William Browning Building (WBB). Most of our department and faculty offices are located within these two buildings.
WBB is also home to Two Creek Coffee.
You can view a virtual tour of FASB below.
Getting involved in college is very important. It can lead to making connections, feeling a sense of belonging, and discovering new skills. It also can help reduce stress and provide an outlet for fun!
